Frequently Asked Questions About Reiki
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a safe, effective,
non-invasive stress-reduction, and relaxation technique that originated in
Japan and is now used around the world. Reiki is a Japanese word, Rei - meaning
"higher power" and Ki - meaning "universal life force energy."
Therefore, Reiki is "spiritually guided life force energy." It is
believed that illness, stress, and disease are brought on by the interruption
of the flow of this Life Force Energy, or when the amount of this energy is low
in a person's body.
Reiki is a powerful tool that
can be used to improve your health, well-being, and balance. It works on all
levels, physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual. As stress can cause
physical discomfort or lead to serious illnesses, the easing of stress often
leads to healing of chronic pain, emotional disturbances, and stress-related
illnesses. It is often used to complement mainstream medicine at many
hospitals, hospices, and clinics.
After a Reiki session, clients usually feel relief
from stress immediately, and more profound healing in 1 to 3 sessions. Most
people experience a pleasant sensation of warmth, tingling, or weightlessness
during the session, and a feeling of relaxation, calm, and lightness after the
session.
Reiki itself is not a religion, but it is a
spiritually guided practice. Reiki Masters therefore recommend that practitioners
and students live in accordance with certain ethical ideals, and do their best
to promote peace, harmony, and compassion in the world.

What
are my qualifications to do Reiki?
I am a certified Usui/Tibetan Reiki Master who
trained with Reiki Master Teacher Rev. Susan Aguirre in St. Paul for 18 months.
I was attuned for Reiki Level I in October of 2007 and completed the Master
training (the highest level,) in March 2008. I began working with volunteer
clients in my home after my Level I training and continued to work with myself
and others ever since. I know firsthand how powerful Reiki can be and have had
several sessions done for me by many Reiki practitioners.
What happens during a Reiki session?
During a Reiki session you will lie on your back or
front on my massage table, fully clothed, minus your shoes, and relax.
Reiki energy can alleviate chronic pain and
discomfort, and relieve emotional issues such as stress, depression, and
anxiety. If you are suffering pain or discomfort, at the beginning of the
session I will ask you to rate your pain on a scale from 1 – 10. It is my goal
to reduce your pain by half, or eliminate it entirely. However, this may take
from 1 – 3 sessions.
After saying a brief prayer, I very gently lay my
hands on (or above) up to 22 different places on your body and rest them there
while the energy flows into you and goes to where it is most needed. The energy
does not come from me; I am merely a channel for the Universal Life Force
energy that is Reiki.
The client may feel a sensation of warmth, tingling,
or nothing at all, but the energy is still flowing. If needed, we will continue
the session with the client lying facedown and additional hand positions will
be used on the back. When the session is complete, I will again ask you to rate
your pain and answer any questions you might have.
What is the Client Interview?
During the Client Interview, the client will be
asked to describe their current life situation, including details about their
career, family, relationships, health, and hobbies. Any questions the client
has about me, Reiki or intuitive mentoring services will be answered. Together
we will determine how to proceed at the next session(s). The interview can also
be completed using email or instant messaging online. There is no obligation to
schedule additional services if you doesn’t wish to proceed and any fees can be
refunded.
Is
energy work safe, and are there any side effects?
Energy work is safe, gentle, non-invasive, and
works on all levels of your being – physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.
Often, clients experience immediate relief for persistent and chronic issues.
Some people experience what is called a Healing Reaction after the energy work
has been done. This may cause a temporary resurgence of pain as toxins and
repressed energetic blocks are brought to the surface to be released. This
discomfort is normal, and should be welcomed as a sign that the energy work has
been successful. Resting and drinking lots of water after the session will help
alleviate any temporary discomfort.
Do
I have to come to your office to have energy work done?
I have a comfortable, private Reiki Room on the
second floor of my home in St. Paul, Minnesota and am available for
appointments during daytime, evening and weekends. If you are allergic to dogs,
cats, or unable to climb steps, we can arrange a mutually agreeable location
for the energy work in the Twin Cities area. Additional fees for travel
expenses may apply. Distance work can be done anywhere at any time for anyone
in the world.
How
does distance healing work?
Energy is the
foundation of the Universe, and is the common thread that unites us all.
Learning how to send energy over a physical or temporal distance is part of the
Reiki training that I completed. Because we are all energetic beings, and
connected on this level, I can access your energy no matter where you are. Many
studies have proven that distance energetic healing does indeed work, but for
most people who require empirical proof, the best way to know is to try it for
yourself.
How
many sessions will I need?
Many people experience deep and profound results after just one
session, and they feel no need or desire to continue. Others find that booking
Reiki sessions on a weekly or monthly basis keeps their body “in tune,” or they
simply enjoy the relaxation and gentle touch of an energy work session. Each
session allows you to release the blocks you are ready to release at that time,
and additional sessions allow deeper clearing to take place. If a specific need
or concern arises, it is a good idea to schedule a session to foster clarity
and clearing of the blocks that are hindering your progress.
Will
you work with my spouse/friend/family member/pet?
I am honored if you refer me to others. A credit of $10 off your next
session will be my gift to you for any referrals. However, due to boundary
issues, I do not do energy work for people that have not personally requested
the work themselves. In some cases, where a child, incapacitated adult, or
animal is involved, I will contact their Essence to request permission before
proceeding with any energy work.
Can Reiki actually cure
illness?
A Reiki practitioner provides help to a client by channeling energy.
The Ki pathways are opened; negative energies are broken up, and replaced with
positive healing energy. Contrary to what many people believe, a Reiki
practitioner does not take credit for the healing. I am only a facilitator for
your own healing, I cannot “cure" you but you can work towards curing
yourself, by making different choices in your attitude, diet, and lifestyle. I
am only a guide to direct you, you will still need to do all the work. I am not
a doctor and do not prescribe any medications nor will I suggest you to change
or alter your established medical regime. Energy work can supplement your other
healing modalities. If you are open to healing, it will come to you, through
me, through others, through traditional or alternative healing
practitioners.
I
am very religious, so is energy healing right for me?
I am comfortable working with people of all religious backgrounds.
Although I do not practice any mainstream religion, I consider myself deeply
spiritual. There are websites you can review to learn more about Reiki and
energy healing to determine if it is compatible with your beliefs. I am open to
suggestions as to how to integrate your religious beliefs into our energy work
together.
